FAQ

Matcha & Hojicha

What is ceremonial grade matcha?

“Ceremonial Grade” is a commonly used term in the U.S. market, but there is no universal official certification or grading standard that every producer must follow. Quality can vary significantly, so we recommend evaluating origin, harvest, aroma, umami, bitterness, freshness, and how the matcha performs in the way you plan to drink it. Learn more in our Ceremonial Grade Matcha guide.

What is Uji matcha?

Uji matcha is matcha produced from tea grown in the Uji region of Kyoto, Japan, an area with a long history of high-quality Japanese tea production. Richly Matcha’s retail matcha collection is sourced exclusively from Uji, Kyoto.

What water is best for matcha?

Soft, clean water with moderate mineral content is a good starting point. Very hard water can change aroma, umami, color, and overall balance, while nearly mineral-free water can sometimes make a drink feel thinner or sharper.

What water temperature should I use for matcha?

We recommend starting around 70–75°C / 158–167°F. If your matcha tastes too bitter or astringent, try lowering the temperature slightly.

What temperature should I use for hojicha powder?

For Richly Matcha hojicha powder used in lattes, we recommend starting around 80°C / 175°F to bring out roasted aroma while maintaining a smooth, balanced flavor.

How should I store my matcha to keep it fresh?

Please refer to our Matcha Storage Guide for detailed instructions on how to maintain aroma, color, and flavor.

How much matcha should I use per serving?

See our Matcha Guide for recommended measurements and whisking techniques.
